Did You Know?

Here's a wacky one.

On my trip to Scandinavia in 2008, we visited Alta, Norway. Alta is a fairly new town, established in 1999, with a population of 17,440 residents. It is the northernmost city in the world surpassing 10,000 inhabitants. Main activities in Alta include trading, small industry, education, and public service. The town is also famous for its slate industry. The Finnmark University College is also here, and there is also a research institution (Norut NIBR Finnmark).
Because of different cultures and eating habits, it is difficult to find restaurants that serve vegetarian food. When we saw a Subway in Alta, we turned the van into the parking lot right away. Walking in, we noticed a sign on the door that said, "Welcome to the northernmost Subway in the world!" Who would have thought that a family from little Lewistown, Pennsylvania, would eat here, 21 degrees from the north pole? This may be humorous to you, but to me, I am proud to say that I ate at the northern most Subway Restaurant in the world. We enjoyed our meal and even packed another sandwich for the next day, just in case we couldn't find something else to eat.
