Today, Wednesday, was field trip day for my class. However, the day didn't get off to a good start. We were told to meet at the London Bridge tube stop at the Borough Market exit. However, when we got there, out teacher was no where in sight and we had no idea where she was. After asking many people and walking back and forth, the 8 of us (majority of the class) finally found her. She first took us to Borough Market. This is a wholesale food market in Southwark. It was a little quiet because it was a weekday. Then, we walked along the river and saw the Shakespeare Globe. Many popular productions such as Macbeth and a Midsummer Night's Dream were playing. From here, we had a great view of St. Paul's Cathedral. We then crossed the river by bridge, straight into the cathedral's courtyard. I was able to get some great pictures. Our ultimate goal was to get to the Museum of London on London Wall Street. I was very excited because this is what one of my articles is about. We arrived at the museum and I was very impressed. It had information about London from 400,000 BC to present day and covered everything from plagues and wars to the Olympic Games in 2012. I found the information very interested and it was presented in a very technologically advanced way. I'll definitely be going back to collect more details about my specific sections for my written assignments. Best of all, it's free! Then, we headed to St. Paul's station to take the tube to Camden Market. This was our journey thus far.
So we took the Central line to Tottenham Court Road and switched to the Northern line to Camden Town. The place was buzzing as soon as we got out of the station. This was the first time I saw many punk-rock type people. Camden town is huge, with stores like Forever 21 to small local markets in which one can bargain for the cutest summer dresses or London souvenir items. We first headed to the halal food stalls in the Camden Lock Market. Here, you can find quick halal-type food of almost any type. We had a small lunch break. I was glad that I packed a PB&J for the trip. It saves money, and it's healthier! The Camden Lock Market is also connected to the Stables Market. It is the largest section of the complex and is located in the historic former Pickfords stables and Grade II Horse Hospital. It was filled with small allyways of countless shops, selling everything. Clothing and artwork of all styles, many of the gothic genre, and London souvenirs. I'm not sure how my teacher knew where she was going. It was like a maze! I'd get lost if I went alone.
Although we were very tired, we weren't done. We then took a long walk to Regent's Park, one of the Royal Parks of London. My class sat under a tree for a while to relax in the beautiful weather, 77 Fahrenheit. After a while, we finally headed to Bond Street where we could take the tube back home. My teacher pointed out Patisserie Valeria and Bonnie Bouce, two pastry shops in which I can write my afternoon tea feature about. I was happy that she was very helpful.
Amara and I had a quick refresher coffee at Eat. while we walked back. On our way, we passed a cafe in which you placed your order at a touch screen at each table. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Then we headed back to Old Street and I was in for another interesting ride on the tube. Along with the creepy Indian guys staring, when we were walking out, a British guy passing me was like "You look very nice darling". It was nice, but I was totally creeped out. I mean, he didn't mean any harm, but I was glad I was with my friend. You really have to be careful around these people when abroad! Especially when you are young. I always make sure I'm aware of my surroundings. My phone or nice technology is never visible and I never make myself vulnerable to a risky situation.
I came back to my room and relaxed for a while. Then, my friend and I made dinner together in her flat (B15). She is in my journalism class and I'm glad she lives in Fleming. We get along really well.
Now I'm in my room and I've been working on my museum piece and I'm about to start my afternoon tea piece.
I have class again tomorrow and then I'll probably check out Patisserie Valerie. SO EXCITED FOR VIVA FOREVER TOMORROW!!! It'll be a girls' date of 4 :)
